The Global Village approachGlobal Village School is a fully accredited distance-learning program based in Southern California. We have been supporting homeschooling families around the world since 1999.
Our program is unique. We focus on the well-being of children, families, communities, and the planet. Ours is a very student-centered approach: creative, flexible, holistic, learning styles-based, and experiential. The child comes first. Our curriculum is relevant and engaging, with a strong emphasis on social justice, diversity, and sustainability. Our materials invoke a sense of enchantment, awe, and curiosity about the world. We encourage students to play, be creative, and spend lots of time outdoors! The curriculum guides do not tell you precisely what to do, day by day; this is definitely not “curriculum in a box.” Families choose which resources to use while Global Village teachers mentor them in creating learning activities that best serve the interests and needs of the children. |
"Where would we be without a GVS curriculum? Swimming with the elephants in Thailand...we are the luckiest people on Earth....an awesome field trip for James. He learned to do a health check on an elephant. He now knows when an elephant is happy or in a bad mood, and when an elephant is sick. The world is the best school ever!!!"

How the Global Village K-8 Homeschooling Program Works
Flexible schedule, official records Schedule: We are a year-round school. While many of our students are enrolled from August/September to May/June, students can enroll at any time of the year. Students wishing to accelerate their progress are free to do so. Official records and certificates: When you enroll in Global Village School you become part of a WASC accredited private school. We maintain all student records and provide annual narrative evaluations and certificates of completion. We do not believe in using letter grades for K-8 (but if you do, we're open to talking about it!) |
Supportive, caring teachers
Teacher support: Each K-8 student is assigned one Global Village teacher for the year. Our teachers are knowledgeable, experienced, compassionate, supportive, and committed to the vision of the school. GVS teachers act as educational advisors, providing oversight and review of coursework alongside advice and encouragement. Families stay in regular contact with their teachers via e-mail, with consultations scheduled at regular intervals either via phone or videoconferencing. The nature of the consultations varies depending on the needs of the family; some families need a sounding board for their ideas, while others need more detail-oriented help. Teacher availability: The amount and frequency of teacher services you receive depends on the level of tuition you choose. The Regular level of teacher support (monthly meetings) works very well for most families, and teachers are happy to answer questions as they arise. Occasionally a family wants weekly support, which is also an option.

Flexible, Engaging Homeschool Curriculum
Curriculum: A Whole Child, Healthy Planet (WCHP) curriculum guide is included in the tuition fee. Our K-8 curriculum guides are distinctive in the world of educational materials. The guides provide the scaffolding you need to forge personalized, and enlivening educational experience for you and your child. The approach outlined in the WCHP curriculum guides combines a student-centered approach that is flexible, integrated, and learning styles-based with an emphasis on social justice, diversity, and sustainability themes. All core academic subjects are explored in a style that encourages students’ sense of awe and wonder through incorporation of art, music, nature, imagination, storytelling and other play. Please note that, unlike many curricula, our guides do not tell you exactly what to do and when to do it. These materials are mindfully arranged to help you chart a course that meets your child where she is, incorporating as much or as little structure as your family needs. Each family reviews the list of recommended resources, consults with their GVS teacher, and then selects curriculum materials to purchase on their own.
Flexibility: Our curriculum is designed to allow students to be self-paced. Students can collaborate with their teachers to customize their studies during the course of the year.

Parents are VIPs!
Parent involvement: Parents are a VERY important part of the homeschooling experience. It is essential that K8 parents (or a tutor, if needed) are available to work closely with their children every day. Submitting work: K-8 families submit work once a month, either online or via regular mail. Parents review for completeness and general accuracy before sending it in. Parents review and score math regularly, and students review and correct mistakes before sending it to their GVS teacher. |
